I misspoke about the RPM install. It will not be a RH supported Package
Manager install.
I tried -e --force and rpm complained that I could only use force with
install, update, etc. In fact I am trying to install the MySQL 4.1 RPM's
for RHEL3. I tried following the instructions in
http://www.redhat.com/archives/psyche-list/2003-July/msg00202.html . The
client tools and header packages installed but the force install of
MySQL-server-standard-4.1.12=0.rhel3.1.rpm failed with "Failed
Dependencies" MySQL conflicts with mysql-3.23.58-15.RHEL3.1

Have you tried rpm -e --force ?
As for not being RPM's.. Why can you not download the RPMs from
MySQL? I use them here and they work fine.
