MySQL 4.1 rpm's work fine - just note that PHP won't work with mysql correctly unless you use old-passwords support in mysql 4.1 (or recompile php against 4.1).

How do I get out of the "catch 22" and get 3.23.58 uninstalled so I can
upgrade to 4.1. (I realize that it will not be an RPM install and will be
unsupported by RH.)
