rpm -i main-1.00-0.rpm
#provides main-1.00-0, main_config-1.00-default
rpm -qf /etc/main-config
main_config-1.00-default
rpm -U /usr/share/main/1.00/localizedconfigs/main_config-1.00-FR.rpm
#provides main_config-1.00-FR obsoletes main_config-1.00-default
rpm -qf /etc/main-config
main_config-1.00-FR
does this explain it better?
We also build RPMs in the post config for some systems, then send the src
back to us and install the rpm.

Thanks for your input. This certainly could work, except that the
configuration files that I package often cannot source a config file.
Thus the need for a more involved approach, such as that suggested by
Rodrigo Barbosa, which I had hoped could be avoided.
