Thanks, I've opened 
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=157931 (although non on the correct RH Linux version, since it is no longer active).

I'll look for the SRPMS in the list, although now I already know it's the %_tmppath var in rpmrc which counts...

I typically find which RH or Fedora release most closely matches the

cvs.rpm.org.   You can find some SRPMS at rpm.org, Jeff Johnson has a
stash of them elsewhere.  If you search through the rpm-devel list you
should see announcements listing locations of rpms and srpms for
testing.
