In my spec file it is specfied as
BuildRoot: /var/tmp/basesystem-root
So, it is not very flexiable.

Really? That should be fixed in the specfile if possible -- the buildroot should almost always be something like:
%{_tmppath}/%{name}-%{version}-%{release}-root-%(%{__id_u} -n)
