In my experience, the above is due to the stripping being done with
eu-strip instead of plain strip, which happens when the redhat-rpm-config
package is installed. I also understood from some of jbj's comments that
the reason stripping was preferred with eu-strip, was to fix similar
problems when stripping with strip... go figure :-/

All in all, I doubt this is related to %_tmppath.
