Looks like the output of 'uname -a' :-)
Sorry, been there, done that. ;-) I get:
[root@enigma root]# uname -a
Linux enigma.j9starr.net 2.6.3-7mdk #1 Wed Mar 17 15:56:42 CET 2004 i686 unknown unknown GNU/Linux
[root@enigma root]#
I take that to mean that it probably doesn't work in enough cases and surely not in the case of a custom kernel. At this point I am nearly certain that I would have to come up with a custom technique that includes getting the output of /etc/distroname and checking the locations of key files and directories, etc.
In the long run, I guess it really just isn't practical. You would think there would be a requirement for at least a link to a filename that never changes. I mean like if mandrake wanted to have a specific file name for thier /etc/version file there should be a Linux standards base compliance rule that states they need to have a link to that file such that the link is the same on all systems.
