Building for different platforms

If I'm building an rpm on a RH 9.0 machine, I've found that I can take
the source rpm, transfer it to a RH 8.0 machine, run 'rpmbuild --rebuild
<src.rpm>' and have it result in an RPM that can be installed on 8.0
machines.

Is there anything wrong with doing this? Is this the standard way to
make RPMs for different platforms?
