different architecture for kernel and application packages

Hi,

I just wonder if it the combination works for me smoothly, I got kernel compiled for Intel Pentinum III (arch: i686), but I have most of the applications compiled for i386 platform. It seems that Intel i686 instruction sets should backwardly support i386|i486|i586 instructions, is that true definitely?. I definitely want to compile kernel+my own packages to i686 arch type to take advantages of CPU power, but most of the packages comes with .i386.rpm suffix and I don't want to compile them one by one.

 Any suggestions?

 Thanks.
