How can I use entries inside rpmmacros file in postinstall process?

All,

How can I use the entries in the .rpmmacros file in %post postinstall process? 
For example, I have defined "%_topdir /home/test" in the ~/.rpmmacros file. I 
can do "echo TEST: %{_topdir}" but i cannot do "VALUE=%{_topdir}" then "echo 
TEST: $VALUE"? 

Am i missing something?
