You need to install devel packages that match the installed XFree86 packages.
Rpm will not let you mix and match. You might want to look at something
like yum or rpm-apt to make your life easier.

If you are referring to rpm it has many options. man rpm to view them.

Oh btw, the latest Xfree rpms for RHL 8.0 are XFree86-*-4.2.1-23. You might
want to update the machine to the latest and greatest packages. This might
be some of your problem as older packages tend to be hard to find.
