[Sound] RedHat 8 silent soundcard

I've tried with two different soundcards now, most recently with a Sound
Blaster Ensoniq AudioPCI (ES1371). I've upgraded the kernel to the most
recent and the ALSA driver is version 0.9.1.

Permissions are set OK, modules.conf too, everything else seems ok. But I
still get no sound and this error:

# aplay: pcm_write:1025: write error: Input/output error.

What does that mean? What's wrong?
