Fwiw, I did a custom install with a whole bunch of rpms, I don't have an isapnp file anywhere, and cat /proc/isapnp yields "no such file or directory."

Hmm. Ok. Sorry. Hope I didn't sound condescending. I wasn't clear on what you thought was missing, and I'd not heard of not having a /proc/isapnp.
Well, I don't know where to go from here. You say your SB 16 is not recognized. Do you mean running "sndconfig" fails to produce anything useful?
If so, I'll have to defer to those more knowledgeable.
