[Sound] NeoMagic hardware in Compaq Presario not working in RH8

I'm a bit new in the Linux world (I've been a FreeBSD guy). I have
wanted to play with Linux for a bit and so I started with a successful
installation of RH 8.0 onto a Compaq Presario (model 1920) laptop.
Everything works fine except the audio (of which there isn't any).
I've done a bunch of searching on a bunch of Linux sites but can't
figure out just what is wrong with my configuration. Here are the
particulars:

Software was a download from RedHat (about a week ago).

"uname -a" shows
Linux bill.topshot.com 2.4.18-14 #1
Wed Sep 4 13:35:50 EDT 2002 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

When I run "sndconfig", I get the following output in
/var/log/messages:

Nov 24 15:36:33 bill kernel: NeoMagic 256AV/256ZX audio driver, version 1.1p
Nov 24 15:36:33 bill kernel: PCI: Found IRQ 10 for device 01:00.1
Nov 24 15:36:33 bill kernel: PCI: Sharing IRQ 10 with 00:07.2

version.
Nov 24 15:36:33 bill kernel: You can force the driver to load by passing in the

Nov 24 15:36:33 bill kernel: IRQ and/or DMA for the sound card, this is *not* the
correct
Nov 24 15:36:33 bill kernel: driver to use.)
Nov 24 15:36:33 bill modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-slot-0

Nov 24 15:36:35 bill modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module sound-service-0-3

I tried entering "force_ac97=1" in my /etc/modules.conf file but it
didn't help.

Here's what lsmod shows:

And last, here's a copy of my /etc/modules.conf file:
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
alias usb-controller usb-uhci
alias eth0 3c574_cs

Any pointers, URL site references, or other assistance would be
appreciated. I'm thinking next to load RH 7.1 (which I have) and see
how that works.

Thanks,

Joe
