The big difference -- in my pea brain -- is the former has a 48 kHz sampling rate, whereas the latter has a 96 kHz -- like for DVDs.
The only curiosity is that /usr/bin/redhat-config-soundcard DOES show an "Audigy" is there, but, alas, no sound.
