no the standard nm256_audio module is not working in my configurations, The
NM256 *NM2200* module didn't work: it load all right, but i had no audio
capabilities. Through my searchs in the net it seems not suitable for
various old laptop like Dell latitude, IBM thinkpad, Sony vaio...also if i
try modprobe -a cs4232 i get the following :

                    ----------------------------

[root@xxxx root]# modprobe -a cs4232
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/kernel/drivers/sound/cs4232.o: init_module: No such
deviceHint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters,
including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/kernel/drivers/sound/cs4232.o: insmod
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/kernel/drivers/sound/cs4232.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.20-8/kernel/drivers/sound/cs4232.o: insmod cs4232 failed

                        -----------------------------
Furthermore, i added this line to /etc/modules.conf :
options cs4232 io=530 irq=5 dma=0 dma2=1
but i didn't get any improvment.
So, after many fails with various standard modules i decided to switch to
the alsa drivers...try to have a quick glance to the link i included in my
first email, it describe better the situation.

and what about that error message :

/usr/src/linux-2.4/include/linux/malloc.h:4:2: #error linux/malloc.h is
deprecated, use linux/slab.h instead.

I get it many times when i compil various "old" program source code such as
"alsa-driver-0.5.12".
