I'd take a guess that the tape device can't handle multiple short reads with a stop between each. Can you extract the entire file OK? (dd if=/dev/st0 of=/dev/null) If so can you pipe (cat /dev/st0 | tar xvf - foo/bar/mumble) if not can you put the entire backup tape on the hard drive as a (huge) tar file and extract from the file?
