First an question on FC1 should go to the fedora list not the shrike
list. There are relatively few people still on the shrike list.

There is clearly something wrong with you passwd file. At least that is
the way it seems to me. One possibility there are two user ids = 500 on
your machine. Are you using shadow passwds. If so does the shadow file
agree usr-id with the passwd file. Some how the machine can't seem to
go newuser's id to the login name. Why it is hard to say with out
seeing the passwd file and the shadow file.
