Is the Canon fb630p scanner useable in shrike?

Hello,

a friend of mine installed shrike on his PC.
Everything was detected but the scanner. The
strange thing is that installing the sane rpms
yeelds a sane-canon_pp.5 man page, but not a
canon_pp.conf file. What needs to be done to
make that scanner work in shrike?

Just uncommenting the canon_pp line in the main
sane conf file won't do anything if there is no
driver, now will it?

I have found online this project:
http://canon-fb330p.sourceforge.net/

I thought to compile and install that driver for my
friend, but:

it wants libieee1284 (library for parallel ports). configure fails like this:

checking for ieee1284_wait_status in -lieee1284... no
Get the latest libieee1284 from http://cyberelk.net/tim/data/libieee1284/
configure: error: FATAL: Failed to find required libieee1284 version (0.1.5 or newer).

and the only ieee1284 files in shrike are

/usr/src/linux-2.4.20-20.9/drivers/parport/ieee1284.c
/usr/src/linux-2.4.20-20.9/drivers/parport/ieee1284_ops.c

So, how can we make this scanner work in shrike? Can we just
mess with the sane conf files (which ones) or do we have to
rebuild the driver in some other way, since (afaict) in shrike
there is no separate ieee1284 library? Would a recompile of
libieee1284 sources mess the system up?

TIA,
Marco
