I'm using kernel-2.6.6, the steps i have done, make
menuconfig, make && make modules_install. if you're lazy then just type make
install. it will automatically configure the grub.conf (it will only work for
kernel 2.6.x). but if you like manually, cp
arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/kernel-2.6.3; cp
System.map /boot/System.map-2.6.3; cp .config /boot/config-2.6.3 (its wise
step). and configure your grub.conf.
this is my grub.conf,
title Custom Linux 2.6.6
root (hd0,6)
kernel /kernel-2.6.6 ro root=/dev/hda8
