The PCI controller in the laptop is PCI1130 from (I believe) TI. The
chipset of the card, I don't know, but if you google it, you find
pages saying "works like a NE2000, module ne.o" or needing the
pcnet_cs driver.
Other info:

If I boot with the card in and Damn Small Linux live cd, I get:
(cardmgr 3.2.2)
cardmgr[55]: socket 0: NE2000 Compatible Ethernet
cardmgr[55]: executing 'modprobe pcnet_cs'

with one beep. At that point it freezes.

This message:

hints at similar problems. I am starting to have the bad feeling that
at some point the kernel/pcmcia development (not any distro)
introduced a bug that simply makes some chipset not work anymore...

Some other chipset info here:

TIA for any more feedback.

Cyberspace means the end of our species ... because it means the end
of innovation. This idea that the whole world is wired together is
mass death.... And believe me, it'll be fast.
