This is the sanest approach. A second hard drive, partitioned the way you wish the first was partitioned, can become a copy/backup of the first drive. Swap drives, and your 'first drive' is partitioned correctly, the second (originally the original) is a backup. When the first disk proves to be a good copy, repeat the process re-partitioning the second (original) drive. Then you can do what few folks do that all folks should do: back up their hard-drive.
