Remapping NICs

I have a box with 8 ethernet ports in it. Upon install, Linux seems to randomly assign ethX labels to the ports.  How can I reassign eth0 to eth4 and so on?

   The box says: Win98, WinNT or BETTER. That's why I installed Linux.
