If your laptop starts in level 5 (so that you have X windows running on VT7), you can use CTL-ALT-F1 to switch to Virtual Terminal 1, login, and start another X display:
X :1 -query remote-host
This will start another X session on VT8 (the next free one), allowing remote-host (presumably, your ltsp server) to handle authentication and login processing, while displaying all X client programs on your laptop. (You can switch back to your local laptop environment with CTL-ALT-F7, and back to the new X session with CTL-ALT-F8.)
