Sorry, mistake: after I *re-started* my system, things change as follows:

$ tail /var/log/dmesg
usb.c: registered new driver usb-storage

  Type:   Direct-Access                      ANSI SCSI revision: 02

kjournald starting.  Commit interval 5 seconds
EXT3 FS 2.4-0.9.19, 19 August 2002 on ide0(3,3), internal journal
EXT3-fs: mounted filesystem with ordered data mode.
