What I do know is that Linux's X takes up a lot of resources.. and you really need a fast processor to get thing snappy.. Even with my centrino 1.4 + 512MB ram, loading up openoffice takes quite a while.. But, I've learned to live with it since I don't use it all that often. That said, IMHO, I think LInux as a desktop would certainly take a while..
