Help!

I am a little confused about SATA disks and whether they are supported
or not. I have just bought a collection of new parts to build a 3 Ghz
system, which includes a SATA drive.

Installation of RH9 does not detect the SATA drive, but does detect my
old 40GB IDE drive. I have installed RH9 on this drive and checked to
see if the OS could detect the SATA drive / interface with no luck. Next
I patched up the system to the latest levels, including the kernel and
rebooted. The new kernel detects the SATA interface and drive no
problem, but then the boot promptly freezes when it looks for a boot
partition on the old IDE disk - it seems to have difficulty reading the
from IDE.

I've found some information about the 2.6 kernel, but nothing about the
2.4 kernel, can anyone help me with this ?

Secondly is there a way to build a custom CD with the new RH patched
kernel so that I can boot and install from this new kernel? I'd like to
run the system on the new SATA drive.

System spec :

Gigabyte 8IPE1000 Pro
Chipset :
Intel 865PE MCH Northbridge
Intel ICH5 Southbridge - Nice MB - pity about the USB / Firewire
connectors

Diamond Max SATA Plus9 80GB drive

Nvidia FX5200 - Does not detect correctly manually edit X config
to use nv driver

Thanks for your help,

Neil.
