"safe" is a relative term.  What is "safe" for an experienced person is
quite different from what is "safe" for the inexperienced.  Even then
"experienced" is also relative.

"safe" is what you feel "safe" doing.

Since there is no way to guess what methods you've explored let me
suggest a method that I used when I was less experienced.

Go out and buy a second disk.  Partition it the way you want.  Move data
to as needed.  You only have a 40GB drive.  They are not so expensive
and the holidays are just around the corner.  :-)
