I believe that this is a known problem with VMware. Rather than using real CDs use the ISO images and switch between them during the install. This also tends to be a lot faster than using a real (and slow) CD. If you don't have the images available, then you can copy the contents of all the CDs into a folder on the Windows machine, make them available over ftp or http and do a network install from the "boot.iso" CD image in the "images" directory on the first CD.
