Does it need to be reconstructed? Does the device come up in a usable manner?
It doesn't come up at all. The boot just skips over assembling the RAID and the mount fails. Does the RAID have to be in initrd? I am not booting from the RAID disk.
RAID shouldn't be requird in the initrd unless you're booting from it. The init script (rc.sysinit) is supposed to load the md module, and then use raidstart to set up the device (unless the device is "noauto" in fstab).
You might try stepping through the instructions in rc.sysinit manually to see what's going on in there.
