Thanks, and I found some pointer on it too.  Turns out one can do
this too:
Type `a' at grub screen and be taken to the correct line immediately.
add a numeral representing desired run level at the end:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.22-1.2088.nptl ro root=LABEL=/ vga=0x318 3
  (or 1 etc)
