Are you trying to get _in_ to the machine through a serial cable
connection from another machine, or are you trying to get _out_ through
the serial cable to something connected to it?

probably not!  Generally the equivalent to windows goes like this:
ttyS0 = com1
ttyS1 = com2
ttyS2 = com3
ttyS3 = com4
