KDE libkdefx.so.4 relocation error

hi folks-
i've just upgraded a rhl 7.3 box to rhl 9, then patched it up to date,
and i've discovered that this KDE install is somehow broken.
when i attempt to start X with KDE, it fails with messages:

startkde: Starting up...
ksplash: relocation error: /usr/lib/libkdefx.so.4: undefined symbol:
_ZN14QPtrCollection7newItemEPv
kdeinit: relocation error: /usr/lib/libkdefx.so.4: undefined symbol:
_ZNK7QObject9classNameEv
startkde: could not start kdeinit. Check your installation.

... and some from ksmserver and kde-config as well, regarding undefined
symbols in libkdefx.so.4. i should add that X starts properly with
gnome, fwiw.

this is a dell inspiron 8200 with a nvidia geforce 4 video card, running
the latest binary drivers from the nvidia website.
versions:
kdelibs-3.1-12
kdebase-3.1-15

has anyone else seen this? i'd love some suggestions on how next to
proceed.
