I'm not sure about maple6, but I had to do this to get maple 8 to work:

LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.1
export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL

Note that the value of the variable is different, I don't remember which
are the values to get one or the other threading, but this worked for me
on maple 8. I simply added those lines to the beggining of the "maple" shell
script.
