IIRC - the redhat-config-users is quite picky about user names which
might otherwise be acceptable.

I would suggest that you check out webmin <http://www.webmin.com> which
I know for sure allows you to create user names with a '.' which of
course would fall under the punctuation no-no per redhat-config-users.
Don't know about underscore because I've never tried but I'm sure it
will work.

I generally would never use redhat-config-users - I don't generally even
install X on servers and from the cli... useradd and userdel work just
fine
