My fault for failing to take note that the readings I was getting were
from hdb (the RH8 hdd) rather than hda (the RH9 hdd).

I just cannot readily get at hda so I will reinstall and start cleanly
-- nothing on it that I cannot live without. It will save time and
hassle.
