Adding memory can cause boot instability several ways:
Memory brand matters, more or less depending on mother
board, CPU type, and power supply quality.
(I've an ABIT KT7-RAID mobo that can handle Crucial, Kingmax, or other 'top brand' RAM up to 1/2GB but chokes on 128MB of
'generic'; it chokes on 3 sticks of RAM no matter what brand
but can handle 2.)
Also, Power supply brand matters, more or less, depending on
other components.
As another poster mentioned, the BIOS version matters as well.
Likewise, BIOS memory timing settings matter. Are you able to
'relax' BIOS settings?
(My ABIT KT7-RAID mobo can accept my Kingmax RAM at 100MHz
but not at 133MHz. Evidently the Mobo doesn't read the "PC133"
sticker on the RAM).
>>> stymar@xxxxxxxx 10/09/03 12:15PM >>> I have a box (800 Mhz Duron) running RHL 9 with up2date up to snuff. I want to upgrade the memory to 512 mb. When I put in the new memory board, It begins to boot up to the messages: RAMDISK: Compressed image found at block 0 VFS: Moutned root (ext2 filesystem). It then hangs. It is past where you choose the kernel but before the nicely colored startup service messages begin. I have tried both adding a second 256 MB board and putting in a 512 MB board by itself. Could there be something I need to add to the grub.conf file or some other file to tell Linux that there is more memory? The data does not get saved in dmesg or messages as I end up having to power cycle the machine. Is there some other file that may reveal useful clues? Thanks for any advise. Robert E.
