Bingo. Thanks. Deleting .openoffice (well, ok, tar'ing it up and then deleting it) did the trick. To fix up the error:
That's a known issue. I believe someone said the fix is to delete the
hidden file .openoffice from your home directory.
sed: can't read /home/jch/.openoffice/user/config/registry/instance/org/openoffice/Setup.xml: No such file or directory
I restored the missing file from the tar'ed old .openoffice.
