I agree!! my sugestions are just to get you started... It seems that you are just running a small "internal" test server so it might not be so bad if you stumble a bit with it.

I do not think that SSL is in any way a 'no brainer'. There are issues such as: updating to the latest version of OpenSSL; obtaining a certificate; installing it; verifying it; developing and testing whatever code requires the encrypted connection; DNS; obtaining domain names...what you are doing is extremely complex and needs careful thinking through.
