I now have an IBM High Rate wireless mini-PCI card in my T30 Thinkpad
and it works perfectly with the hostap drivers in ad-hoc mode.
Get hostap-0.0.4.tar.gz from http://hostap.epitest.fi/.

The laptop originally came with a Cisco Aironet mini-PCI card, which
was an endless source of frustration and aggravation, so I junked it.
The IBM card with the orinoco driver was much better, but still froze
up at random times. The hostap driver has never done so.
