Edit files via ssh with gui editors

I've been looking for a way to use a gui text editor to edit files on a remote server.

Most options seem to involve a fair bit of setup at one end or both ends.

I recently discovered the fish:// protocol in konqueror that seems to use ssh to
allow gui based (in konqueror) file browsing and the ability to edit remote files
with a local gui editor.

It seems to make a temporary copy via scp and when you save, it overwrites the
existing remote file via scp.

This is EXACTLY what I want due to it's simplicity.

My only problem is that I haven't been able to run KDE for over a year (on my
laptop) due to some kind of config problem and after spending time trying to fix it,
I got frustrated and switched to gnome (where I have now grown very comfortable)

Although I can run konqueror in gnome, it loads all the kde libraries (or at least a
bunch of them) and I'm already swapping memory to HD due to RAM linitations.

I hope that someone can tell me of an equivalent (simple) system in a native gnome app.

I'm not afraid of switching editors. I do mostly php programming and use scite. I
have also used quanta in the past.
