I was surprised too, but it works...the problem is that it needs to be on the same network :/
I can't beleive there's no other way - as was pointed out, you should have 2 separate lans, otherwise you're just fooling yourself. however, linux can be made to play along, if you insist.
What is the output of the command "ip route"?
