Assuming you are using RHL 9 and the included version of OOo (1.0.1?):
For user only:
	Copy *.ttf files to ~/.fonts
For system-wide use:
	As root, copy *.ttf files to /usr/share/fonts

For use in OOo:
	Run Programs->Office->OpenOffice.org Printer Setup
	Click Fonts...
	Click Add...
	Enter the directory holding your *.ttf files, and select the 
	ones you want to be available in OOo (you may want to 
	check "Create soft links only")

As far as OpenOffice.org hanging on you, what steps had you taken to
this point?
