kernel upgrade to 2.4.20-20.9 breaks rc.sysinit

hi,

I have recently upgraded my kernel to 2.4.20-20.9. I am also running
2.4.20-8 (comes with rh9).

Booting up using 2.4.20-8 works just fine, but when I boot with
2.4.20-20.9 rc.sysinit fails at the "Checking root filesystem" stage
with rc of 8. I get the error message

initlog -c 'fsck -T -a -C /'
/dev/hda3 is mounted. e2fsck: Cannot continue, aborting.

My grub.conf looks fine, and if I go into repair mode, I can easily fix
it all up then init 5 to get the machine up. Just won't do it from boot.

I have searched the archives and google and have not found an answer to
this.

Thanks, Gillian
