Mailman question

Apologies if this isn't Redhat specific but I can't see how mailman 
picks up emails coming in.

I want to setup the mail to be retrieved via POP3 and then processed by 
mailman but can't see how Redhat interacts with it (It has a rc.d script 
but I think thats more to do with onward delivery to subscribed users).
