well, not sure.
But if you suddenly get a lot of work on a daily/weekly/monthly basis,
the culprit is very likely to be a cron.
RedHat distros always put a couple of I/O intensive daily cron. (update
for locate, and makewhatis and some more)
Removing them is one of the first things I do when I install rh on a low
end box, or else, I end doing it 5 minutes (or more )after I notice a
significantly slowdown on the machine and suddenly remember...
