help xmms problem

Yesterday I downloaded and installed the xmms 1.2.8 rpms. Now when I try 
to play an mp3 file, I get no sound and the slider seems to be running 
at about 5x speed, though inconsistently. I tried an mp3 that worked 
wonderfully with xmms 1.2.7, so I don't think the problem is with the 
mp3 file. What have I done and how do I fix it?
