Inserting and having it auto mount is probably OK.  I'd think twice
about the reverse since there is a chance all of the data may not have
been written to the device prior to pulling it out.  You run the risk of
getting a corrupted file.  Issuing the unmount command will ensure all
data is first flushed to the device.
