Hello Bill,

To me, one on the best book that I've found while starting in Java is : "Thinking in Java", from Bruce Eckel. An online version is available at : http://www.mindview.net/Books/TIJ/
But you may also purchase the printed version, which is very practical as a reference.

I never registered to a mailing list for Java, so I don't have any recommendation for this. But Sun is surely a good place to start!
Lots of interesting articles and code samples also at IBM under the "DeveloperWorks" http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/

I hope this helps getting you started with Java! I wish you a good day!
Thierry
