java uninstall/upgrade?

java owns me. i wanted to put jedit on my laptop with red hat 9. so off to download sun's java 1.4.1_02. i installed the bin file (as root to /usr/local/java), then downloaded the jedit .jar file and attempted install it using the following command:
# java -Djava.compiler=none -jar jedit40install.jar

i get an error that states 'java command does not exist'.

i also noticed that the newer 1.4.2 version is now available, so i wanted to remove the 1.4.1._02 version and upgrade to 1.4.2. what is the best way to do this? install 1.4.2 in the same location as the 1.4.1_02? seems like there has to be a better option.

so how do i do the upgrade to the newer JRE and then get it running so that i can successfully install jedit on my machine?
